Early Life: A Rhythm in the Making
William Howard Hendricks was born September 15, 1951, in Vance County, North Carolina, to the late Will and Elizabeth Harris Hendricks. As the youngest of ten children, seven of whom preceded him in death, Howard grew up surrounded by a family that valued devotion, resilience, and the power of shared song. He spent his early years in a Christian home, where music began to pulse through his veins.
A Move, A School, A Beat Found
The Hendricks family relocated to New Jersey in 1967, and Howard completed his high school journey at Edison High School, graduating in 1970. He pursued specialized training at a technical school, earning certifications in electrical and appliance repair. Yet even as he mastered circuits and steady voltage, the drums called—a tempo of faith and family that would never fade.
The Drummer’s Call: Gospel, Congas, and Congregations
Howard’s love for music flowed from an intensely musical family and a steadfast faith. He cherished playing the drums and congas, bringing life to every gathering, service, and stage. He performed with groups such as The Carolina Kings and served in churches where his heartbeat synchronized with the rhythm of praise. He remained an active drummer at Young’s Memorial United Holy Church (formerly New Bethel United Holy Church) until his health began to decline earlier this year.
A Return Home, A Family’s Welcome
Howard returned to North Carolina, where he found joy in family life with Avis Carter. From their union came two children, Lekeisha and William Jr., who carried forward his legacy of dedication, faith, and music. The home he helped shape echoed with melodies, stories, and a love that harmonized across generations.
A Lifeworker: Hands That Fix and Hearts That Serve
Beyond the stage, Howard worked as a truck driver for many years. He later established Howard’s Appliances Repair, a shop known for its knowledge, reliability, and generous service. Through his work, he touched countless lives, repairing not just appliances but also the burdens of everyday moments, always ready with guidance and a listening ear.
Remembrance and Legacy: A Family, A Community, A Song That Endures
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Will Hendricks and Elizabeth Harris Hendricks; six sisters; one brother; and his great-grandson Dashawn Rainey. He leaves to cherish his memory one son, William H. Hendricks Jr., of Mebane, NC; one daughter, Lekeisha Michelle Hendricks, of Henderson, NC; four granddaughters—Janiya Israel, Amarriah Hendricks, Ayana Hendricks, and Ajah Williams—all of Henderson, NC; one grandson, Keshawn Hendricks, of Danville, VA; one great-grandson, Adrian Williams, of Henderson, NC; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Hendricks, of Henderson, NC; one brother, Robert E. Closing Chorus: With Gratitude and Hope
His family and friends loved Howard and will greatly miss him. His life was a testament to faith, to the power of music to bring people together, and to the quiet strength of a man who served his community with his heart, hands, and drums. May his memory continue to echo in the rhythms of our lives.
