Lawrence Dunston Obituary

A Life of Duty and Dignity

Ecclesiastes 3:2 "There's a time to be born and a time to die." On March 17, 1936, Mr. Lawrence Rainey was born to Rufus Rainey and Jessie Belle Lewis Rainey. He was lovingly raised by his maternal aunt, Emma, and her husband, William Dunston, whose care and guidance helped shape the man he became. Mr. Dunston received his education through the Vance County School system, graduated from Henderson Institute in 1955, and went on to build a life through his dedicated work at Camp Butner in Butner, NC. At an early age, Lawrence attended Kesler Temple AME Zion Church, served on the Steward Board, sang with the Senior Choir, and was a member of the Sunday School Ministry.  He was known for his strength, character, and the relationships he held dear. In his leisure time, he enjoyed the simple pleasures of life—playing checkers and cards, listening to and following various quartet groups, and the company of family and friends.

The Legacy of Family

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Willie Rainey, Sr., and Rufus Rainey, Jr. (SonnyBoy), and his sisters, Mary Rainey Brown, Linda Faye Williams, and his nephew, Garrett Rainey.  He leaves to cherish his memory his loving daughter, Minister T. Arnetta Dunston (Pittsboro, NC), his grandchildren Jesse Ray Jones, Jr. and wife Quinesha, granddaughter Felecia'h Jones, and 5 great-grandchildren, Justyce, Jacob, Jaylen, Jaianah, and Jordynn, all of Hampton, VA. He is also survived by three sisters, Ms. Lillie Rainey Hargrove (Henderson, NC), Ms. Shirely Rainey (Warrenton, NC), and Ms. Pamela Rainey (Kittrell, NC); two brothers, Evangelist Mr. Dennis Williams (Henderson, NC) and Mr. Larry Rainey (Henderson, NC); one sister-in-law Ms. Shirley Rainey (Stafford, VA); two special nieces Brenda Rainey Lauderdale (Stafford, VA) and Vicky Henderson (Henderson, NC); and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends. He also leaves a granddaughter in his heart, Davida Lewis.

A Community Pillar

Mr. Dunston's life will be remembered with love and gratitude by all who knew him. In every role—son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend—he demonstrated quiet strength, practical wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to those around him. His steady presence, generous spirit, and work ethic left an enduring imprint on the community, and his memory will continue to inspire those who carry forward his values.

In His Own Words and Forever in Our Hearts

As we say goodbye, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man who gave his best to his family, friends, and neighbors. May the memories of his kindness, his humor, and his steadfast faith comfort all who mourn his passing. Though he has entered life's eternal rest, the legacy of his love and labor remains with us, guiding us in the days ahead.
