Janet Uvonne Champion, known by many as “Babysister,” passed away peacefully at home on May 13, 2026, after a life marked by strength, resilience, and an unwavering devotion to others. Born on December 31, 1950, in Vance County, she was the daughter of Thomas Champion and Beatrice Davis Champion, and she carried their legacy of love and perseverance with grace. Janet attended Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ as a child and youth, and she pursued her education at Henderson Institute in Henderson, North Carolina, where she began the lifelong habit of giving her best to everyone she encountered.
Her professional journey included a long and meaningful tenure with Harriet Yarns, where she poured heart and effort into her work and the people she served. Janet’s hobbies—jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, coloring books, and planting flowers—reflected a thoughtful, patient, and joyful spirit that found peace and purpose in simple, creative moments.
Janet’s love for family was profound and enduring. She shared a deep, steadfast bond with her children, and she stood as a devoted sister, daughter, and aunt. In her immediate family, she is survived by her son, Alvin Champion (Felicia), and her brother, John Thomas Champion (Yvonne), who continue to honor her memory. She also leaves behind grandchildren, including Shamon Champion, and great-grandchildren, such as Omar Carr, who carry forward her legacy of care and resilience. Janet’s nickname among loved ones, “Babysister,” spoke to the nurturing, protective role she embraced throughout her life. She also maintained a long-standing friendship with James Yancey (BaBa), who preceded her in passing, a reminder of the cherished connections that enriched her years.
Preceding Janet in death were her sisters: Jane Yvonne Champion Yancey, Beatrice Champion Terry, and Nancy Champion Williams. The community remembers a strong, resilient woman who gave her all to everyone she met, facing life’s challenges with courage and a generous heart. Her memory will continue to inspire those who knew her, and her legacy of love, dedication, and steadfastness will endure in the lives she touched.
