James Louis Overby

Mr. James Louis Overby, son of the late Allen Jr. Overby and Lillie Mea Overby, was born on August 27, 1953, in Vance County. He departed this life on January 7, 2025, in his residence at Maria Parham Apartments.

James was a man whose presence spoke softly but whose heart shone brightly. Quiet by nature, he carried a heart of gold that touched everyone who had the fortune to know him. His gentle spirit and steadfast kindness will be remembered by all who knew him.

Early Life and Education
At an early age, he was a member of Hughes St. Church of Christ. James was educated at Vance County Public Schools, where he laid the foundations of his compassionate character. His faith and values guided his steps throughout life.

Career and Hobbies
He was employed by the City of Henderson until retirement, dedicating himself with the same quiet diligence that defined his personality. James enjoyed fishing and hunting, activities that brought him peace and moments to reflect on life’s blessings.

Family and Legacy
In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by four brothers: Jessi Overby, George Overby, Thomas Overby, and Thurston Overby, and one sister, Brenda Perry.

He leaves to cherish two sons, Germont Hargrove of Henderson, NC, and Keyton Overby of Charlotte, NC; his wife, Linda Overby of Henderson, NC; and one grandchild, Devin Wyche. He also leaves seven brothers—Charles, Andrew, Jonathan, Levi, Larry, Lamont, and Robert, all of Henderson, NC—and two sisters, Lillie Durham (Robert) of Manson, NC, and Debora Powell (Jamaine) of Henderson, NC; and a host of 16 nieces, 18 nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Celebrating a Quiet Life
James’s quiet demeanor did not diminish the impact of his life. His generosity, loyalty, and unwavering kindness left an enduring imprint on family and friends. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue to inspire those who followed in his path.
