Elsie Hargrove Obituary

Elsie Lorene Royster Hargrove, born on April 10, 1944, in Granville County to the late John Henry Royster and Annie Mildred Marrow Royster, entered eternal rest on Saturday, May 3, 2025. A woman of unwavering faith, boundless love, and dedication, Elsie’s life was a testament to her deep love for her family, her passion for education, and her commitment to serving others.

Elsie was a devoted Zoar Chapel United Methodist Church member in Bullock, North Carolina, where she served faithfully for many years. Her roles included Lay Leader, Building Fund Treasurer, Sunday School Superintendent, Local Lay Speaker, Usher, and Trustee—each position reflecting her heartfelt commitment to her church community and her desire to uplift others.

Throughout her life, Elsie’s greatest joy was her family. As a loving mother to Patrice Gray (Melvin) of Henderson, NC, and Prentice Hargrove (Kimberly) of Roxboro, NC, Phillip Hargrove and Pamela Hargrove of Bullock, NC (deceased), she poured her heart into nurturing and supporting her children and grandchildren. She was intensely proud of her eight grandchildren—Melvin Jr., Montavis, Makayla, Kierra, Malcolm, Mehki, Amaya, and Aidan—and her two great-grandchildren, Kaiden and Ava, cherishing every moment spent with them. Her love extended to a vast network of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, whom she touched with kindness and humility.

Elsie’s lifelong passion was education. Beginning her teaching career in her early twenties, she dedicated over 43 years to inspiring and shaping young minds. Her unwavering commitment to excellence earned her numerous recognitions, including Teacher of the Year for Vance County Schools. After retiring from Vance County, she continued her mission of education in Clarksville, Virginia, touching the lives of countless children with her warmth, patience, and wisdom. She loved sharing family and church history, and one of her proudest achievements was publishing the history of Zoar Chapel, preserving her community’s legacy for generations to come.

A humble woman, Elsie always saw the best in everyone she met. Her life was marked by her steadfast faith, love for her family, and passion for educating children. She believed in the transformative power of education and dedicated her life to making a difference in the lives of others.

She is survived by her daughter, Patrice Gray (Melvin) of Henderson, NC; her son, Prentice Hargrove (Kimberly) of Roxboro, NC; five siblings: Carolyn Walker of Oxford, NC; Gerald Royster of Durham, NC; Gloria Smith (Joe) of Oxford, NC; Connie Smith of Richmond, VA; and Curtis Royster (Barbara) of Oxford, NC; one aunt, Dorothy Harris of Rockaway, NJ; her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to her parents, Elsie was preceded in death by her daughter, Pamela Jean Hargrove, and her brothers Leo Royster and John Gordon Royster.

Elsie’s legacy is one of love, faith, and a lifelong dedication to education and family. Her spirit will forever inspire those who knew her, and her memory will remain a guiding light in the hearts of all she touched.

If you should offer flowers for the funeral, the family has requested that they be potted flowers.
