Dorothy was born on January 10, 1949, in Vance County. She grew up in the Henderson community and attended Henderson High School. Dorothy's life was rich with experiences that shaped the love she carried for her family. She was raised by her father, Bill Champion, and her mother, Maggie Williams, and she shared a home with her son for the final chapter of her life, embodying a deeply rooted sense of home and family.
Family and Foundations
Dorothy was a devoted daughter, sister, mother, and aunt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert Venable; her father, Bill Champion; her mother, Maggie Harris; one sister, Mary Harris; and a niece, Margrette. She leaves behind two sons—Raymond Venable and Andre Venable, both of Henderson, NC; and two daughters, Connie Venable of Henderson, NC, and Violetta Harris (John Harris) of Norfolk, Virginia; one niece, Tammy Williams (Delaware); and a sister-in-law, Vernice Macon (Warrenton). She cherished her children above all, and her intense passion for family was evident in every act of love she shared.
Character and Passions
Dorothy’s heart beat most strongly for her family. She had a deep love for music and sewing, creating both joy and tangible keepsakes that continue to tell her story. Her life was marked by a generous spirit and a maternal presence that welcomed everyone into her circle.
Faith and Community
In her youth, Dorothy attended Rowland Chapel Christian Church, laying a spiritual foundation that she carried with her. Later in life, she connected with Freedom Life Baptist Church, reflecting the enduring nature of her faith and community ties. Her faith, along with her love for family, remained central to who she was.
Career and Work
Dorothy contributed to her household and communities through meaningful work at John Bill & Pacific Coast Feather. Her professional life, like her personal life, was marked by dedication, labor, and care for those around her.
Legacy and Remembering
Dorothy “Brown Sugar” Venable leaves behind 11 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren, and friends. Her legacy lives on in the music she loved, the sewing she created, and, most profoundly, in the lives of her children and grandchildren who carry her memory forward every day.
